Our story · fictional portfolio content

A light left on for the neighborhood.

Midnight Diner is a fictional brand. The story, staff and milestones below were written for an EBJ Studios portfolio concept.

How it started

Twelve stools and a coffee pot.

In 1987, Sal Moretti noticed that the only lights left on in the West Village after midnight belonged to hospitals and taxi garages. So he rented a narrow storefront, bought a used flat-top grill, and kept the coffee hot for the people who worked while the city slept.

His wife Rosa brought the recipes. The neighbors brought their friends. Somewhere along the way, a place built for the night shift became the place everyone ended up — after the show, after the breakup, after the big news.

Milestones

Nearly four decades on the block

  1. 1987

Sal and Rosa Moretti open a twelve-stool counter on Bleecker, serving coffee and eggs to night-shift nurses and cab drivers.

  2. 1994

The first red leather booths arrive. Rosa's meatloaf goes from Sunday special to permanent fixture.

  3. 2003

During the blackout, the grill runs on gas and the doors stay open. The neighborhood never forgets it.

  4. 2011

Daughter Lena takes over the kitchen and introduces the Midnight Smash Burger.

  5. 2019

Friday and Saturday go 24 hours. The milkshake tin becomes a local icon.

  6. Today

Still family-run, still refilling coffee before you ask, still the light on at the end of the block.

Our commitment

Comfort food, cooked like it matters.

Bread from a Queens bakery, beef ground fresh every morning, pancakes from Rosa's original card. We feed the people who keep this city running — and anyone else who's hungry.
